Density Slicing Techniques for Soil Survey

Abstract

AbstractA density slicing system is used by experienced soil surveyors to interpret photographic tone patterns associated with soils of the Lake Dakota Plain area of north‐central South Dakota. The density slicing system color encodes the variation in optical density of film transparencies and measures the percent area of each color encoded density level. Field checking verified that the soil boundaries were more accurately located on the color encoded density maps than on the existing soil maps of the area.
