Abstract

In this paper different methods for the calculation of densities of states and other physical quantities by their continued fraction expansions are compared, and a new technique is presented. Continued fraction expansions truncated at different orders are considered as the terms of a sequence convergent to a limiting value. The philosophy of the method is the acceleration of such a sequence by means of appropriate algorithms. Operating in this way, the author observes a net reduction of spurious unphysical features of numerical origin in the results.
