Abstract

For the most simple model of the nucleus, a system of independent fermions with equally spaced single-particle levels, the density of particle-hole states is calculated. The exact result, obtained by combinatorial methods, is compared with a level-density formula which is derived by means of the statistical approximation in the conventional way. Even simplifying approximations of this formula are in good agreement with the exact result.
