Abstract

The formation of the earth's core was due to the density differentiation of the primitive matter of the earth. This differentiation should be in progress at the core-mantle interface in the present epoch. Redistribution of substances of various densities gives rise to large-scale convective motions in the core and mantle. These motions create the geomagnetic field, and they may be a cause of disturbances at the core-mantle interface. It is shown that the outer core cannot be composed of a mixture or an alloy of two or several substances.
