Abstract

Reliable autotrophic denitrification for removing nitrogen from wastewaters can be obtained with thiosulfate or sulfide, or both, as electron donors for enriched cultures of Thiobacillus denitrificans in completely mixed suspended growth systems. The consumptive ratio for T. denitrificans denitrification appears to be close to 1.35, the thermodynamically predicted value. Systems are tested under dynamic loading conditions, and overall operational stability is assessed. (2 diagrams, 1 graph, 6 tables)
