Abstract

Abstract Dengue is an arboviral infection with dreaded haemorrhagic complications. It is endemic to hyperendemic in various parts of India. High degree of suspicion, an early clinical diagnosis, close follow up and monitoring is essential for management. However, diagnosis may be missed due to similar clinical features and laboratory parameters to other viral and infectious illnesses. Performing DENV specific antigen assays and antibody estimation to all patients with high grade fever, bodyaches and arthralgias may not be cost effective and available in remote areas. A search for specific clinical indicators of dengue infection would help screen out subjects with probable dengue infection. Generalized cutaneous erythematous blanching rash early in the course, a late appearing classically described as white islands in a sea of red eruptions, palmar erythema and pruritis provide early clinical indicators of dengue fever and should be specifically looked for in patients with probable dengue viral infection.
