Abstract

A hitherto undescribed species of Sciaenidae is described, characterized by the presence of a pair of tapering barbels situated between the first (median) and second (paired) mandibular pores of the lateral line system. In many other external characters and in the structure of the gas-bladder it resembles Dendrophysa russelli (Cuvier), which has a single, median, tapering mental barbel. Following recent authors, primary importance has been given to the structure of the gas-bladder and the new species has been placed in Dendrophysa as D. hooghliensis. In general appearance this species resembles Day's (1878) figure and description of the estuarine form of Sciaena albida, stated to have two pairs of barbels. Sciaena albida Cuvier, however, has no barbels.
