Abstract

Detailed numerical studies on dendritic growth and some preliminary results on directional solidification are discussed. Crystalline anisotropy is necessary for dendrite formation in free dendritic growth while the anisotropic thermal gradient field in directional solidification is found sufficient to produce dendrites also in that case.
