Abstract

For those who have a manuscript gracing their desk blotter and are curious how to begin the publication process; for anybody who has entered the process, perhaps with uncertainty; and even for somebody who has published once or extensively, this essay may be of interest. I explicate the steps a manuscript takes: from manuscript submission to the external (anonymous) review process to journal production. I utilize the present journal as the primary example, but the activities involved in getting one's work published are similar for any refereed journal in the humanities. Publication in a journal such as the Journal of Women's History is open to everybody--whether one is a graduate student, independent scholar, or tenure-track professor. The key elements in the process are educating oneself in appropriate possibilities for publication, applying the submission guidelines, and preparing a quality manuscript. An author's attention to detail makes smooth each segment along the way.
