Abstract

A bimodal distribution of rat liver mitochondria was observed after rate zonal centrifugation in a Ficoll gradient. Addition of succinate and ATP to the gradient increased the sedimentation coefficient of both mitochondrial populations but did not affect the sedimentation of lysosomes. An uncoupler of oxidative phophorylation, carbonyl cyanide m-chlorophenylhydrazone, reversed the effect of succinate.
