Abstract
Toughness data are presented for three typical structural welds. All the three welds showed significant pop-ins at low toughness (0.02 < δ c < 0.06 mm) in Crack Tip Opening Displacement (CTOD) tests. In spite of this, the structural safety of the welds is demonstrated by their ability to arrest large running cracks at two-thirds yield stress in the double tension wide plate test. A method of deducing an estimate of crack arrest toughness from the CTOD test itself is presented, and shown to be conservative.
