Abstract

Sixteen channels of 10-Gb/s signals were successfully transmitted over five spans of 80 km using gain-clamped semiconductor amplifiers as inline amplifiers in combination with distributed Raman fiber amplifiers. The combined amplifier had a gain of 20 dB and a noise figure of less than 2.7 dB. No penalty was observed when 15 out of 16 channels were dynamically add-dropped in the 400-km transmission system.
