Abstract

The paper explores how the evolution of power systems has driven development of STATCOM technology and explains the role of STATCOM in the transmission network. Technological improvements in Voltage Source Converter (VSC) technology are leading to the capability to build larger STATCOMs with a single VSC. The paper analyzes the potential value to transmission network operators as a result of recent developments in the industry. A comparison between a single VSC and a dual VSC STATCOM is performed using a realistic transmission planning case to address the discussion taking place in the industry. The results show that a single VSC STATCOM provides value in the form of increased reliability and availability, reduced required maintenance time, simplified operation and a smaller physical footprint, all while achieving the same system performance.
