Abstract
Comparative federalism is a flourishing research field. Over the last decade, scholars showed growing interest in the democratic quality of federations and the impact of federalism on democracy. This article reviews relevant publications in this emergent research field. Apart from studies on individual federations and literature on specific aspects like intergovernmental relations, party systems, elections, parliaments and courts in federal systems, there is a lack of systematic comparative work considering the varieties of federal democracies. While we know that multilevel governance in federations and democratic politics operate in different ways, we need to learn more about how the ensuing tensions are dealt with and how this conforms to principles of federalism and democracy.
