Abstract

Purpose: Childhood non-accidental trauma (NAT) is the second most common cause of pediatric mortality in the United States. This condition is frequently unreported and missed upon presentation. When missed, there is a 30-50% chance of repeat abuse and a 5-10% chance of death from abuse. Thus, identifying current risk factors for NAT as well as injury patterns that have a high association with NAT may assist physicians in recognizing these vulnerable patients.
