Abstract

Abstract We have shown through the results of a detailed in-depth, nation-wide survey of tire road hazard damage a number of significant factors: (1) Tire cutting by glass is the most frequent cause of road hazard damage in all types of service and for all types of tires. (2) Road hazard damage due to rupture occurs more frequently on high speed highways than in any other type of service. Rupture damage is a more frequent occurrence in 4 ply nylon tires than in 2 ply rayon. (3) The relative incidence of road hazard damage is a function of both population density and precipitation.
