Abstract

Purpose: Although the effectiveness of long-term opioid use in pain management has never been convincingly established, its use has increased in tandem with more liberal prescribing practices. Little is known about the characteristics of women who take prescribed opioids. Thus the aim of our study was to examine factors (demographic, psychosocial factors, and musculoskeletal pain) associated with prescription opioid use in community-based middle-aged women.
