Abstract
Purpose: We report the histological changes in the duodenal biopsy in patients with malabsorption from north India. Methods: Patients with diarrhoea and anemia wire investigated for malabsorption syndrome. Results: Total of 58 patients were included in the study, male to female ratio was 1.9:1 and all had had diarrhea with anemia. Twenty four patients (41.4%) were in the age group of 20-40 yrs, 16 (27.6%) patients were in the age group of 40-60 yrs, 13 (22.4%) patients were more than 60 yrs and 5 (8.6%) patients were less than 20 yrs. Histopathological report revealed normal histology in 57% of patients. Villous atrophy was seen in 18.9%. Twenty two percent of patients had Lymphocytic Infiltration. There was one patient aged >60 years whose biopsy was suggestive of malignancy. Conclusion: Majority of patients with malabsorption (57%) had normal histology on duodenal biopsy. Villous atrophy was seen in 19% only.
