Abstract

The vitality of rural regions is a public good, which importance is widely recognized by the scientists all over the Europe. For a variety of reasons regions evolve differently. The vitality of rural areas is the main concern of politicians in many countries, as rural areas are faced with depopulation, rural residents are migrating to the bigger towns and cities for search of jobs, services, amenities, which are difficult to be offered in the rural areas. Regions vitality depends on many factors, one of which is the demographic potential of the region. The article explores the relationship between regions vitality and demographic indicators. The municipalities of Lithuania were divided in 3 regions by indicator of migration in to viable, middle viable, not viable. The meanings and tendencies of demographic indicators were investigated in those regions. An investigation showed that the less viable regions the worse demographic values during the period investigated, which implies the need of different policy measures to be developed for regions of different viability status.
