Abstract
This chapter focuses on how Baptist churches treated women and blacks. Southern churches were female preserves, and throughout the 19th century women made up between 60% and 65% of the membership of the Baptist churches of Georgia. Baptist churches also became spiritual havens for an increasing number of African Americans. Baptists boasted about the converted slaves, whose religion refuted abolitionist beliefs, that southerners neglected the souls of slaves.
