Abstract

Democracy encourages the citizens to take part in the political process and at different levels through different means .This paper examines the concept of democracy, elections and political participation in Nigeria since the return of democracy in Nigeria 1999 to 2 011. The framework of analysis adopted is Group Theory. The Theory talks about the role of the Group in the political process. After a critical analysis of democracy, elections and political participation in Nigeria since 1999 to 2011, it was discovered that participation was at steady decline as result of so many abnormalities inherent in our democractic process. The paper ends with conclusions, findings and recommendations. Some of the recommendations include among others strengthening the political institutions to serve as agent of change and serious punishment for electoral offenders.
