Abstract

1997 saw several initiatives working towards the banning of land‐ mines; the conference in Oslo set the ball rolling and the Conference in Ottawa in early December is the latest addition. The Ottawa Conference also focused on next steps after the ban. Here Ambassador Karl F Inderfurth lays out the US Demining 2010 Initiative’. The US has, since 1993, devoted more than $150m to this purpose land has experts all over the world assisting in the removal of the mines. While the universal land‐mine ban is of paramount importance. Ambassadpr Inderfurth points but that we must focus on the next important task at hand—to clear the mines that threaten civilian population. Part of the Demining 2010 Initiative is the creation of public‐private partnerships and improved international cooperation and coordination in global humanitarian demining. The next phase of the Ottawa Process is the next step in this direction.
