Abstract

Blastocyst bisection and blastomere separation have been used to generate genetically identical twins and multiple embryos to increase the number of transferrable embryos. Blastomeres at early embryonic stage are believed to be totipotent. Surprisingly, mouse embryos were recently found to initiate their polarity from the two-cell stage with one eventually proliferating into embryonic entity and the other to abembryonic tissue. The purpose of this study is to time the initiation of the first polarity in mouse embryo and find a strategy to improve the efficiency of embryo splitting.
