Abstract

Most landslides in Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) area (China) contain coarse-graded soil forming the sliding zone. Conventional laboratory tests with small size samples are not suitable to study the mechanical behavior while large-scale triaxial tests and field tests are often too costly and time-consuming. In the paper, a DEM approach is described for modeling coarse-graded soils. DEM samples are generated based on 2D thin-section of X-ray CT images of intact coarse-graded samples. A series of DEM biaxial compression tests are then conducted to investigate the mechanical behaviors of a coarse-graded sample.
