Abstract

February 2006. The problem presented in the class's calculus textbook was to find the horizontal and vertical tangents as well as the concavity for the folium of Descartes and then graph the folium. The answer given (in the back of the book) had a curve with an oblique asymptote. Neither the book nor the solution manual provided a way to find the equation of the oblique asymptote, although the solution manual did prove that the limit of the difference between the y-value of the curve and the y-value of the asymptote was zero. Searching the Internet for wisdom was fruitless, so we actually had to think for ourselves.
