Abstract

A general algebraic formalism for investigating hierarchies of integrable systems through delta equations is presented for the two representative cases of the Korteweg-de Vries and the Toda hierarchies. A fundamental tool is the 'spectral Wronskian'. The standard class of solutions decaying at infinity and that of self-similar solutions are characterised within this framework.
