Abstract

Our point of departure is the performance paradox in major projects. The use of projects as a means to deliver strategy for firms, policy for governments, and as a core business process for earning revenue is ubiquitous but the performance of these projects though is inconsistent at best. The challenge arises as to how to theorize these contexts for the purpose of improving understanding and potentially reducing this performance paradox. Our purpose is to consider the potential content for the operations design of major projects, both the options and constraints. The proposed panel symposium engages a cross-disciplinary group of scholars in a moderated and interactive discussion to develop further understanding of operations design challenge related to delivering major projects. Suggesting that designing operations for delivering major projects can be described as a ‘wicked mess’, requiring 'resolution', we will address the following topics from multiple perspectives: (1) What are the main operations design challenges for successful delivery of major projects? (2) How can we theorize these design challenges? (3) How can we study the challenges?
