Abstract

Part 2 of delivering public legal education (PLE) focuses on one particular form of PLE – legal literacy initiatives or, as they are often known in a law school context – Street Law sessions. The chapter examines Street Law in terms of its history and evolution and then turns to how to implement this approach to PLE staring with making contact and connections in the community to researching, planning and delivering, and evaluating the work. The content here is written very much from the perspective of enabling law schools, staff and students, to establish and run an effective Street Law programme and to this end a significant part of the chapter is devoted to a template handbook that provides detailed guidance to those wanting to set up or develop their PLE provision. The handbook is annotated so that key points are highlighted and places where adaptation may be necessary (e.g. to comply with jurisdictional requirements) are flagged up. It should be possible therefore for those interested to take and utilise the template without having to reinvent any wheels.
