Abstract

A long-term follow-up study followed 500 juveniles adjudicated as delinquents into adult life in each of two counties in Pennsylvania. The subject's self-report of whether or not he/she committed delinquent or criminal acts before first contact with the Juvenile Probation Department bore no relation to his/her criminal conviction in adult life. However, self-report of involvement in delinquent or criminal acts with friends, and the frequency with which friends were involved in such acts, were strongly related to adult criminal conviction. Reform of the delinquent with delinquent friends involves his/her making a change of friends.
