Abstract

To the Editor: A 50-year-old man presented with a 5-year history of urticaria developing approximately 3 hours after eating ground beef. The eruption cleared with diphenhydramine. In the next 4 years, the patient experienced similar eruptions every time he ate ground beef. Recently, he had awoken with urticaria about 4 hours after consuming a large steak. He reported no problems with chicken, other fowl, or fish ingestion. IgE level to galactose-alpha-1,3-galactose (alpha-gal) was 47 kU/L (normal <0.35 kU/L).
