Abstract
Summary Soybeans infected with Bradyrhizobium japonicum 29ITn5, a mutant of strain 61-A-101 with a 88%, respectively 44 %, lower V max for the two succinate uptake systems, revealed a delayed onset of nitrogenase activity, a chlorotic phenotype, reduced dry weights and low nitrogen content of the plant tops. Nitrogenase activity of free-living cells of strain 29ITn5 was reduced to 4–7 % of the wild type. Electron micrographs of nodule sections indicated normally shaped bacteroids with only a few PHBA granules. Peripheral amyloplast accumulation and internal vacuolation were especially noticeable in the infected cells.
