Abstract

What made the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) reach a peace agreement with the Colombian government at the end of 2016 after more than fifty years of war? In the book From Limbo to the Final Peace Agreement, Professor Esperanza Hernandez Delgado reveals the complexities of the process, the background on which it relied, and a series of factors that led to its successful conclusion. Notably, she highlights the significant accumulation of the processes of peace that took place in Colombia, showing how each one contributed useful lessons for subsequent processes. The greatest contribution of this enlightening work lies in the lessons learned from each experience, in particular from the peace process that the government of President Juan Manuel Santos carried out with the FARC. This book is the result of a long research process that began at the time of the announcement of the peace negotiations with the FARC in 2012 and culminated in the beginning of the post-agreement phase. Based on an extensive review of the literature and interviews with negotiators involved in the peace processes of the 1990s and the current peace process, as well as with other people familiar with these processes, the author tries to reverse the image of a submerged Colombia in violence and show another face. The country has had many peace processes that have offered valuable lessons, whether or not they reached a final peace agreement.
