Abstract

In this study, MgAl layered double hydroxides were used as support precursors for the preparation of PtSn/MgAl mixed metal oxides (PtSn/MgAl) catalysts. The resultant catalysts were characterized by many techniques. The addition of Sn and high reduction temperature increased the Pt particle size. In the dehydrogenation of methylcyclohexane, the products were hydrogen and toluene. The introduction of Sn into Pt supported catalyst significantly improved the dehydrogenation activity. When Sn content was 0.5 wt % and MgAl mixed metal oxides was used as a starting support, 90.5% conversion and 262.1 mmol/gmet/min H2 evolution rate were obtained at 300 °C. Moreover, these PtSn/MgAl catalysts presented high anti-coking ability and good stability. No carbon deposition and conversion reduction were observed after the dehydrogenation reaction for 10 h.
