Abstract

The oxidative degradation of ethylene-propylene elastomers (EPR and EPDM with 3.5% ethylidene-2-norbornene) was investigated in the presence of ozone. Experiments were performed at two ozone concentrations (50 and 200 pphm) in air and at three temperatures (30, 40 and 50 °C). Some samples that underwent ozone attack were previously irradiated with medium gamma radiation doses (0.15 and 0.30 MGy) to generate new reactive centers. The chemical changes were recorded by means of IR spectroscopy. The behaviour of the irradiated materials was compared to the unaged materials. The kinetic parameters (the oxidation rates and the corresponding rate constants) and the activation energies were calculated. The chemical results of the degradation of elastomers after their reaction with ozone are noted.
