Abstract

The deformation of quench-hardened gold single crystals has been studied by observing stress-strain curves, formation and growth of slip bands, and slip channels at various testing temperatures (4.2° – 575°K). The plastic deformation took place exclusively in distinct slip bands and these slip bands correspond to slip channels which are free from tetrahedral stacking faults. The slip band density and average shear displacement per band were measured as functions of macroscopic deformation and found to satisfy the empirical relationships developed for the case of quenched-hardened aluminum. The nature of plastic deformation in quench-hardened gold is discussed on the basis of these observations.
