Abstract

This paper presents a deformation kinetics approach to modelling dwell fatigue. The kinetics of dislocation pile-up is formulated as a competition between dislocation glide and climb. The continuously distributed dislocation theory is used to model the nucleation of Zener–Stroh– Koehler (ZSK) cracks in anisotropic materials. The mechanism of interaction between a fatigue crack and microZSK cracks is also elucidated and a dwell fatigue life equation is derived based on the above considerations. The model is validated using data reported in the literature.
