Abstract

Evidence is presented for the formation of wedge-type cracks at annealing twin boundaries in Type 304 stainless steel deformed in the slow tension and creep-rupture modes at 650 °C. The observations indicate that twin boundaries may behave in a manner similar to grain boundaries under the test conditions employed in this work. A mechanism based on deformation induced twin boundary sliding and cavity formation is suggested to explain the observations.
