Abstract

It is well known that certain copper alloys, such as CuAl or CuZnAl exhibit a β−β′ martensitic transformation. β is a bcc phase, β′ is a 9R martensite. A β crystal can transform into 24 β′ variants, each having the same crystal structure but different orientations. The formation of such a variant is associated with a certain strain, which is considerably larger than usual elastic strains.
