Abstract

The material consisted of domains, i.e., groups of sub-parallel clay plates, which in general retained their identity. Pre-peak deformation involved negligible or slight changes of particle orientation, a small increase in the size of domains, a decrease in inter-domain void ratio, and negligible change in intra-domain void ratio. Post-peak deformation involved breakdown of domains in the failure ‘plane’.
