Abstract

The Central Moment Tensor (CMT) solution of Jiashi strong earthquake sequence issued by Harvard University is analyzed in the paper to invert for the regional basic stress field. The systematic cluster analysis of CMT solution shows the time-sequence features in 3 periods. Further analysis on the stress field in the focal region discovers the variations taken place in the period from March 1, 1997 to Jan. 4, 2003. Since Feb. 24, 2003, the direction of basic stress field is recovered. Thus a complete process from the initial variation in the basic stress field to the final recovery of the basic stress field is finished. Combining with the force condition and tectonic background in the region, the genesis for stress field variation of strong earthquake sequence is also discussed in the paper. We suggest that Jiashi strong earthquake sequence has the characteristics of body fracture.
