Abstract

Health registers that cover entire Nordic nations present a valuable source of data for epidemiologic research. However, identification of incident cases based on register data is especially challenging for Parkinson's disease (PD) due to the lack of a clinical gold standard and the existence of diseases with similar symptomatology. Some registered PD diagnoses may therefore be erroneous. Similarly, records of filled antiparkinsonian medicines may reflect other treatment indications or testing the presence of PD pathology.
