Abstract

A magnetic fusion reactor concept called TRACT (Triggered Reconnection Adiabatically Compressed Toroid) has been examined as a candidate for a small fusion reactor. A preliminary conceptual design of a TRACT fusion power pilot plant indicates that a 65 MWthermal system might produce a net of 6.3M electric power. Helium cooling using HTGR technology with a cylindrical blanket would be the cooling medium. Tritium production would not be an integral part of the blanket. The first wall material would have to be a ceramic. Simplicity of design was emphasized. Criteria restricting the technology to late 1980's were imposed on the design resulting in identification of key issues to be resolved in any development program.
