Abstract

This article discusses new tools to help plan for and incorporate sustainability of water resources into water supply system design and operation. Environmental stewardship is discussed and explained as minimizing the effect of water supply management on downstream ecosystems. The article presents advances in computer modeling that help in balancing changing water demands with improved understanding of environmental needs. Specifically, the article discusses the Stockholm Environment Institute's Water Evaluation and Planning (WEAP) modeling platform and lists the four elements of water supply management that it offers.
