Abstract

Public participation geographic information system (PPGIS) is a global research agenda and practice that aims to broaden the access of GIS technologies to socially marginalized groups in order to facilitate informed participation in decision-making. It prioritizes indigenous or experiential knowledge and advocates its integration with public datasets to contest or reshape policies. PPGIS projects range from rural land use, to conservation and natural resource management, to urban planning, to social and environmental activism, to advocacy. PPGIS work has been shaped by integrated theoretical framework derived from social and political theory, science and technology studies, human–computer interaction, organizational theory, and feminist theory. Participation and spatial knowledge production from PPGIS is situated, highly contingent, and shaped by contextual factors such as political, economic, cultural, and organizational contexts.
