Abstract

The findings, based on a qualitative question which was part of a larger study aimed at uncovering the perceptions of community nurses (CNs) on the meaning of health Promotion, are presented here. One hundred and ninety-six answers were content analysed with the aim of identifying a) the theoretical meaning of health promotion according to CNs and b) the levels that CNs thought that health Promotion incorporates. CNs' perceptions of health promotion were wide. However, the concepts of lifestyle advice, health education and disease prevention at primary and secondary levels were predominant. Although the findings suggest that CNs incorporate health promotion in their everyday practice, it seems that there is a need for further advancement in their understanding in order to improve their practice. Education at both pre and post registration levels should therefore include health promotion not as an area of practice only, but as a core concept.
