Abstract

The recurring tendencies in the American news media's coverage of foreign social movements illustrate the interaction between journalism and social change. By examining how the media defined Poland's Solidarity trade union movement, Czechoslovakia's Civic Forum, and East Germany's New Forum, I will identify the ideological meanings and values conveyed by the coverage of these movements, all of which significantly affected the political and social transformation of Eastern Europe.
