Abstract

Drawing on data collected during a prior study of characteristics of volunteers, this paper examines some of the factors related to volunteering and offers speculation on the interpersonal processes affecting participation in research. In particular, modes of interpersonal interaction and their relationship to the experimental situation are analyzed. The defensive components of approval motivation and their relevance to interactive modes are discussed.
