Abstract

The pronotum of mature female Umbonia crassicornis causes rejection when the insect is captured by the lizard, Anolis carolinensis , while teneral adults and 5th instars are rejected on the basis of taste. Individual aposematic shape and cataleptic behavior enhance the defensive function of teneral adult aggregations. The dorsal horn of the pronotum is necessary to maintain these aggregations. Removal of the horn in combination with other ablations disrupts normal aggregating behavior.
