Abstract

Metal-free carbon nanomaterials have been considered electrocatalysts to replace precious platinum in the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). In this issue of Chem, Li et al. demonstrate that new active sites reconstructed from edged pentagon defects, thiophene S, and graphitic N (N-S-C) are responsible for the high ORR activity in acid electrolyte.
