Abstract

In this work the copper decoration technique was applied to evaluate the different kinds and the frequency of defects in coated steels. For that purpose, different coatings, i.e TiN deposited by the arc PVD technique and Zr-B as well as Zr-B-N deposited by the dc magnetron sputtering process, were used. The application potential of the decoration technique for the evaluation of crucial defects for the corrosion behaviour of the coating-substrate system was shown. The main results obtained can be summarized as follows: The copper decoration technique can be applied successfully to investigate coating defects extending through the entire coating. The peripheries of droplets and craters in PVD coatings are sources of potential defect sites extending through the coating. Whereas both Zr-B and TiN coatings are inherently porous in character, Zr-B-N coatings do not possess inherent porosity
